2012 Fantasy Baseball: Which Red Sox Closer is Worth Owning?

Bailey is out until the All-Star Break in a best-case scenario.

The Boston Red Sox thought they had their closer position all nailed down when they had Johnathan Papelbon finishing out games. Papelbon bolted for Philadelphia after six seasons in Boston and Andrew Bailey was brought in from Oakland to fill the role.

That was until Bailey tore his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right thumb during spring training. Bailey is going to have surgery Wednesday and will be out for at least the first half of the season. When the UCL is damaged in the elbow, it results in Tommy John surgery. The recovery time here is shorter since it’s a smaller ligament in the thumb compared to the elbow.

Who will fill in for Bailey and are they worth owning from a fantasy baseball standpoint?
