2012 Fantasy Basketball: Schedule Analysis Week 3

Derrick Rose

Rose is a beast, but always check with the schedule gods first.

Schedule analysis is a key component in any type of fantasy basketball league.  This should be one of your most important evaluation topics when determining who to pickup and drop week to week.  In salary cap fantasy basketball, checking a players schedule should be done when considering every move due to the fact that you never half to worry about other owners picking up players that are dropped.  That doesn’t mean it’s not important in a head to head (H2H) league to evaluate a players schedule, just not in the same way.

In a salary cap league, an owner either receives a lump sum of trades for the total season or gets so many per a week.  Either way your transactions are limited and should not be wasted on a trade just to improve your teams score for one night.  That’s where my weekly schedule analysis articles are going to help you evaluate potential moves to make each week based off a team’s schedule.

A slightly different approach needs to be used for evaluating a player’s weekly game schedule in a H2H league.  An owner should be more focused on their bench players schedule rather than their star players.  This is due to the fact that other owners can pickup anybody that is dropped.  So the players you drop each week are the guys that will not hinder your team further down the road or give another team a big advantage.  Also if evaluating a trade, you may want to consider a players total amount of games left in the season.

Teams with the most games this week are the Philadelphia 76ers, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls, Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Bobcats.  Every one of these teams has 5 games this week and can help you win your match up or maximize your total points.  For the weekly  salary cap fantasy basketball owners try picking two or three players from the list below.

Guards: Derrick Rose, D.J. Augustin, Ben Gordon, Lou Williams, Jrue Holiday, Jose Calderon,

Forwards: Andre Iguodala, Carlos Boozer, Luol Deng

Centers: Spencer Hawes, Greg Monroe, Andrea Bargnani

Now from the H2H league perspective, I would recommend checking out these players below.

Guards: Jerryd Bayless, Richard Hamilton, Brandon Knight, Evan Turner

Forwards: Ed Davis, Jonas Jerebko, Taj Gibson, D.J. White

Centers: Byron Mullens, Omer Asik

Let’s look at the opposite end of the perspective for the players to drop or avoid for salary cap.  The teams with the least amount of games this week are the Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, Miami Heat, L.A. Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, and the Oklahoma City Thunder.  All the teams in the previous list only have three games this week; also steer clear of the Orlando Magic who only have two games, OUCH!

Guards: Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, Kyrie Irving, Brandon Jennings, Dewayne Wade, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook

Forwards: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Antwan Jamison, Lebron James, Chris Bosh, Ryan Anderson, Blake Griffen, Rudy Gay, Kevin Durant

Centers: Andrew Bogut, Dwight Howard, Marc Gasol

Players to ditch or stay away from for H2H leagues are:

Guards: Ramon Sessions, J.J Redick, Mario Chalmers, Mo Williams, Sam Young

Forwards: Brandon Bass, Alonzo Gee, Drew Gooden, Udonis Haslem, Nick Collison

Centers: Jermaine O’Neal, Kendrick Perkins

The recommendations given above should allow your team to excel this week regardless of the league set
up.  Another key to remember is that a player who plays less than 10 minutes per a game is not a good switch for a
player who is the first player off the bench.  A good example would be that I would not drop JJ Redick of the
Magic to pick up Matt Carroll of the Bobcats.  Take a look at Redick who averages 25mpg, 12ppg, 2apg, and 2rpg Vs.
Carroll’s averages of 9mpg, 2ppg, and .5apg.  Even though Redick plays three less games than Carroll this week doesn’t
mean you should do this switch.  Make sure to use some common knowledge when deciding what moves to make.  All the teams not mentioned above have 4 games this week and are considered neutral.
